What is a sleep study?

This is the best test to diagnose sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders. It is also called a polysomnogram (PSG). It can be performed in a laboratory in a hospital or within the comfort of your own home. There is established evidence in the literature to support the benefit of home based sleep testing in children, these are also known as level 2 polysomnograms.

Instead of re-creating a video to explain what a sleep study entails, we find watching this video from the Royal Children’s Hospital website very helpful to show children what to expect when they come to the clinic for a setup.

Keep in mind that at Prana Sleep, your child will attend a clinic to be setup then return home to sleep in their own bed. The study will be unmonitored. All equipment is returned the following day and our expert paediatric sleep scientists will begin analysis of the data.

This handout explains how home sleep studies are carried out at Prana and contains helpful tips to achieve a successful study.

Information for families pre-test

At Prana, we find empowering families with information prior to the sleep study is key. We find it helpful to provide two vital documents: “What is OSA?” and “What to expect with a home sleep test : A parent guide”.
